John Schreckengost

John Schreckengost graduated from Butler University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education. He earned his Master of Music in Music History and Horn Performance at Bowling Green State University where he served as a Teaching Assistant in Renaissance and Baroque Music. During seven years as principal horn for the Israel Sinfonietta, he pursued an active solo and chamber music career, with extensive recording and broadcast performances. He commissioned and premiered more than a dozen chamber works, performed as a soloist with the Haifa Symphony, Israel Sinfonietta, and Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra, and worked as an extra for the Jerusalem Symphony. He also served as chair of the brass department of the Beer-Sheeva Conservatory.

Returning to the United States, Mr. Schreckengost was named principal horn of the Northwest Indiana Symphony in 1991. He also holds positions in the Chicago Sinfonietta and Illinois Philharmonic, and has played with the Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Nutcracker Ballet at the Arie Crown, and Chicago productions of Sweeney Todd and The Secret Garden. He has substituted or played as an extra with the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera, and Grant Park orchestras, Fulcrum Point, the Contemporary Chamber Players, and performs regularly with the Chicago Classic Brass Quintet. His arrangements for horn ensemble have been featured by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra horn section and by the Chicago Horn Consort.

Mr. Schreckengost was a member of the jury for the University Division of the 2007 International Horn Competition of America, and is on the Board of Advisors for McGraw-Hill’s production of the third edition of Katherine Charlton’s Experience Music!, one of the standard texts for teaching music appreciation nationwide.
