Bring your family to experience music, words and drama celebrating the spirit of an American visionary.
The powerful program will begin with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished,” followed by Adolphus Hailstork’s Epitaph For A Man Who Dreamed, a 1979 composition saluting Dr. King, which was previously recorded by the Sinfonietta in 1995. This orchestral work will feature spoken word by Congo Square Theatre Founding Member Aaron Todd Douglas and Ensemble Member Ann Joseph.
A highlight of the program will be Michael Abels’ Dance for Martin’s Dream, which begins “in somber remembrance but bursts into danceable, cross-cultural melodies,” according to the composer, who is expected to be in attendance for the two performances.
Tchaikovsky’s inspiring 1812 Overture, which concludes the event, will feature a combined Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Sinfonietta — some 105 musicians on stage and a brass band off stage!
“It is both our privilege and duty to pay tribute to Dr. King, and his important contribution to American race relations and justice for all,” says Maestro Paul Freeman, Founder and Music Director of the Chicago Sinfonietta. “These concerts celebrate a great man and his ‘unfinished’ business.”
